Report: Former Illinois Assistant Wayne McClain Passes Away

(CBS) Former Illinois basketball assistant and state champion high school coach Wayne McClain has passed away at 59, according to the Champaign News-Gazette.

He is survived by his wife Robin, son Sergio, daughter Brindeshie and grandson Sergio Jr., according to the News-Gazette.

McClain had been hospitalized earlier in the week with pneumonia.

McClain is one of the state's most successful high school coaches of all time, leading Peoria Manual to three consecutive state championships from 1995-'97. He later joined Bill Self's staff at Illinois in 2002-'03, then stayed on as an assistant when Bruce Weber replaced Self, who left for Kansas. McClain was a member of staff during the entire Weber era, which ended following the 2011-'12 season. He also was on staff for one season with Weber at Kansas State.

Most recently, McClain was the coach at Champaign Central High School.
