Former Bears QB Injured In Apparent Suicide Attempt

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Twenty years ago, Erik Kramer was getting ready to start as quarterback for the Chicago Bears.

On Thursday, the 50-year-old was recovering from a possible suicide attempt.

Back in 1995, The Score's Dan Bernstein covered the Bears, including Kramer. Kramer holds Chicago's single-season passing record and spent five years with the team, but he spent time earlier this week in a California hospital.

Law enforcement sources say he suffered non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound, a possible suicide attempt.

"I'm as saddened and as shocked as is anyone," said former Bears coach Dave Wannstedt.

In published reports, Kramer's ex-wife said he suffered from years of depression due to his time in the NFL. Teammates note he suffered a severe neck injury but was not linked to injuries like potentially brain-damaging concussions.

Following football, Kramer, 50, dealt with a divorce and the loss of his son, a high school football player who overdosed on heroin.

Not long after, some noticed the former Bear became more withdrawn.

Bears analyst Hub Arkush helped Kramer with his broadcasting career following football. He said over the past year or two Kramer was less visible or available.

The Bears issued a statement through a spokesperson: "Our prayers are with Erik and his family."
