Report: Blackhawks To Play Capitals In 2015 Winter Classic In D.C.

(CBS) The Blackhawks will play the Capitals in the 2015 Winter Classic in Washington D.C., TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie reported.

It was previously known that the Capitals would host the Jan. 1 game, but their opponent wasn't known until today. Nationals Park is the likely venue to host the game, McKenzie reported, echoing an earlier report by ESPN.com.

Washington missed the playoffs this past season, finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.

Chicago is no stranger to outdoor games. The Blackhawks hosted the Red Wings at Wrigley Field in the 2009 Winter Classic and hosted the Penguins last season at Soldier Field in the Stadium Series.

Assuming HBO continues its 24/7 series, the Blackhawks will likely be featured on the well-received show, which traditionally features the two teams participating in the Winter Classic.
