Remains Of 27 Oak Brook Settlers To Be Re-Buried
(CBS) -- The bodies of 27 Oak Brook pioneers are nearing their journey's end, reports WBBM's John Cody.
They were buried in the late 1800's in the Thurston family farm plot then relocated for a road expansion, but not all the graves got moved. Kevin McGowan, director of the Public Service Archaeology & Architecture Program at the University of Illinois, has dug them up for placement in Butler Cemetery.
"If we had two individuals who were buried side-by-side, they will be re-buried side-by-side," said Dr. McGowan.
Dr. McGowan says this may actually be the final resting place for the 27 Oak Brook pioneers.
"One can never say in the next 1,000 years that someone is not going to say another cemetery has to be removed," he said.
Dr. McGowan says the bodies will be reburied when he receives the required coffins by September at the latest in Oak Brook.
