'Real Men Read' mentorship program returning to East Garfield Park

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Students at an East Garfield Park school got some special visitors turned mentors.

The "Real Men Read" project is returning to an East Garfield Park school for the seventh year. The program promotes literacy and offers mentorship.

"It just has a quality impact in terms of how they act socially as well as academically so just having that positive male figure really enhances their experience as scholars in school," special education teacher Anshon Humphries said.

On Tuesday, the Learn Charter School Campbell campus welcomed volunteers from the "Boys to Men Network Foundation Inc.," Principal Ayanna Mitchell said.

"Put down the phones. Turn off the tv and open up a book. A book will take you to many different places."

Volunteers had breakfast with students and read to them.

The organization also hosts an after-school mentoring and book club.
