Rauner Signals To Women Voters: I'm Not Scary-Conservative
(CBS) – The Republican candidate for Illinois governor is making a targeted appeal to Chicago voters that seems to say, "I'm not a scary conservative."
But CBS 2's Jim Williams reports Bruce Rauner did not elaborate as he campaigned in north suburbs on Tuesday.
We know North Shore businessman Bruce Rauner has a lot of money. So, with wife Diana and running mate Evelyn Sanguinetti, he made yet another attempt to show he's a regular guy.
Rauner shook hands with diners at Portillo's in north suburban Vernon Hills during lunch.
Meanwhile, his campaign sent a flyer to another group: women voters in heavily Democratic Chicago neighborhoods.
"I don't have a social agenda," the Republican says in the material.
On the back, Independent Manny Sanchez and Democrat Lula Ford make the same claim – that Rauner isn't really interested in hot-button social issues.
Rauner was reluctant to elaborate, though, as Williams caught up with him, trying to steer the conversation instead to economic issues.
Tuesday, a political action committee began airing an ad aimed at hurting Rauner's reputation among women voters. The ad says he steered money to right-wing groups and politicians that "oppose birth-control converage."
Personal PAC -- an Illinois pro-choice group -- is spending $750,000 to air those ads attacking Rauner.
Rauner says he is pro-choice. His campaign says Gov. Pat Quinn's economic and education policies have been a disaster for women.
