Rauner Schedules Special Election To Replace Schock

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has called for a special election to fill the vacancy caused by former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock's resignation.

Rauner's office wants a special primary election held on June 8 and a special election on July 24. Candidates will be able to file nominating papers with the state board of elections between April 15 and April 20.

However, Rauner's office warned Tuesday the actual dates of the election will be changed in order to comply with federal voting law.

Officials say Rauner will issue an amended election schedule.

Schock, a Peoria Republican, formally resigned Tuesday. The Justice Department is looking into Schock's office expenses, re-election campaign spending and relationships with donors.

State law requires a special election be held within 120 days of the seat becoming vacant.
