Railroad Kills Ravenswood Gardens By Mistake
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Urban gardeners are getting an apology after their landlord accidentally destroyed some of their crop in Chicago's North Center.
Gardeners who paid to plant in neatly kept plots on the street side of the fence bordering Metra tracks along Ravenswood were seeing red as their greens turned yellow.
Union Pacific Spokesman Mark Davis says it was due to a miscommunication with a contractor spraying weed control after some engineers saw vegetation encroaching on the railroad's right of way.
He says they're sorry and are reviewing the agreement with the Montrose Metra Community Garden to make sure the garden isn't posing any safety concerns.
Davis says the railroad will plant signs so there's no confusion about plants growing in that area in the future.
