Raging Fire Engulfs West Side Building

(CBS) – A firefighter was injured Thursday afternoon during a three-alarm fire at a West Side commercial building. Smoke could be seen for miles.

Firefighters were called to 3909 W. Harrison Street in the Lawndale neighborhood around 3:30 p.m., and the fire was quickly escalated to extra alarms requiring a greater response. The site of the fire is along the Eisenhower Expressway.

Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford says the fire started on the roof of the commercial building, which houses LPI Worldwide and spread to a neighboring business, Harris Ice Company and a two-story residential building.  A firefighter suffered exhaustion-related injuries, and propane tanks inside the building exploded at one point.

The blaze was out by 5 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene.
