Race Against Hate Honors Memory Of Ricky Byrdsong

(CBS) -- The church massacre in Charleston adds special poignancy to another racially-motivated killing spree.

It was 16 years ago when a white supremacist killed Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Birdsong and, this weekend marks the annual Race Against Hate in his memory.

"My prayer is that those families, those communities and the city of Charleston can find their silver lining in this senseless tragedy as we have to honor those nine lives... to overcome hate with love, to become more united than divided, and to be a better city than they could have ever been before," said Sherialyn Byrdsong.

Sherialyn Byrdsong now lives in Atlanta, but comes back every year for the Race Against Hate.

The Byrdsong family has also established a foundation to combat hate, taking their message to schools and community groups.
