Quintana, Ramirez Combine To Lead White Sox Past Twins 5-1

CHICAGO (AP) -- Jose Quintana struck out a career-high 13, Alexei Ramirez homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1 in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday.

Quintana (8-10) allowed a run and two walks in seven innings.

Phil Hughes had a career-high 11 strikeouts, and he became the first Twins pitcher to have double-digit strikeouts in an outing since Francisco Liriano on July 18, 2012, against Baltimore.

Hughes (15-10) allowed five runs -- three earned -- in seven innings.

The Twins struck out 17 times while the White Sox fanned 12 times.

Ramirez had two hits. His two-run shot in the third opened the scoring. Carlos Sanchez scored on Ramirez's 15th homer after reaching on first baseman Joe Mauer's fielding error. Ramirez was 4 for 20 in his career against Hughes before connecting.

The White Sox extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh on Andy Wilkins' RBI single after Jordan Danks doubled.

The White Sox earned their first three-game win streak since July 24-26.

Twins pinch-hitter Chris Parmelee had an RBI double in the eighth.

Quintana struck out six straight in the fifth and sixth innings. He exited after issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth after 111 pitches. Quintana needs 14 1-3 innings to reach 200 for the second consecutive season.

Hughes was lifted after allowing a leadoff double and hitting Jose Abreu in the eighth. Hughes, who is tied for second in the AL with 15 wins, has pitched at least seven innings in each of his past seven outings.

The teams are playing a doubleheader after rain postponed Friday's series opener.

The Twins have lost 12 of 16.
