Public Housing Advocates Take Over Vacant Units At Lathrop Homes To Protest Redevelopment Plan
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Public housing residents and their supporters are taking over some vacant units in the Lathrop Homes in an effort to get more details and affordable housing about a redevelopment plan.
On a chilly Palm Sunday, the group carried palm leaves and religious leaders carried crosses to the housing complex at the busy intersection of Diversey and Clybourn.
Reverend Liz Munoz of Nuestra Senora de las Americas says "it's sinful" that about 148 unites of the 925 unit complex are occupied.
The group, holding palm leaves and signs calling on the mayor to "show us the plans" and stop displacing black and brown families.
They're upset the CHA's plans for mixed-income housing at Lathrop will mean 525 public housing units won't be replaced.
WBBM has reached out to the CHA for comment.
Meanwhile, in a letter to Alderman Joe Moreno last month, CHA CEO Eugene Jones Jr said the agency "is committed to producing 525 new housing opportunities, in general and opportunity areas in the north side of the city, understanding that the timing will be based on the availability and price of the properties".
