(CBS) -- St. Alphonsus School in Prospect Heights is up against a Monday deadline to raise $300,000 or this could be the last year the school is in operation.

Reports WBBM's Mike Krauser St. Alphonsus was made aware in early December it might be closing and just before Christmas the Archdiocese of Chicago said it had a deadline of January 4 to come up with $300,000 in pledges.

Linda Bromer, an administrative assistant helping with the fundraising effort, which includes a gofundme page, says they've raised over $180,000 so far.

"It's actually pretty amazing," she said. "It's a combination of school families, parish families, there are alumni who have pledged, complete strangers and we're so grateful for all of the heartrending stories that have been emailed to us from people who have been involved in St. Alphonsus over the years."

They have 160 students, not enough to break even. The Archdiocese wants commitments from the families of current students that they'll stay and a workable plan to grow enrollment.
