Proposed Settlement Tab For 2 Fatal Police-Involved Shootings: $5.3 Million

CHICAGO (AP) -- The city of Chicago is poised to pay more than $5.3 million to families of two African Americans who were fatally shot by police.

On the City Council's finance committee's agenda on Monday are city law department recommendations to settle for $3 million with the family of 17-year-old Cedrick Chatman and $2.365 million with the family of 27-year-old Darius Pinex. Typically, the committee and the council follow the law department's recommendations.

Pinex was shot in 2011 and Chatman was shot in 2013 as he ran away from police after a suspected carjacking. In January, a federal judge accused a city lawyer of hiding evidence in the Pinex case and ordered a new trial for officers who'd been cleared of wrongdoing.

That month, video of the Chatman shooting was released.
