Pregnant Woman Shot To Death In South Shore

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A pregnant woman was found shot to death Thursday afternoon in an apartment in the South Shore neighborhood.

Patrice L. Calvin, 26, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in an apartment in the 7500 block of South Luella at 12:06 p.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Patrice, who was four months pregnant, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:27 p.m., authorities said. She lived on the same block.

"She had a beautiful smile. She was very independent," said Aaron Calvin, Patrice's father. "She loved her family, she looked very much to having her first child."

Police were called to the apartment building on Wednesday night. Calvin said a neighbor called saying they had heard gunshots from the apartment.

"I do want to know why there wasn't a forced entry last night. Police got the call. Neighbors called them, they came, they knocked on the door, why didn't you open the door? My daughter could've been in there bleeding! She could have still been alive! My daughter was carrying my grandchild. That's two people dead."

A Chicago Police Spokesperson said, by law, officers cannot force entry unless they observe a situation where someone's life is in jeopardy.

No arrests have been made as Area South detectives investigate.
