Postal truck struck by gunfire in West Town

Mail truck damaged in broad-daylight shooting in West Town

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A postal truck was caught in gunfire near a high school in the West Town community Tuesday afternoon.

As CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported, a crossing guard for William H. Wells Community Academy High School said she came face-to-face with two young men who returned fire after at least one person in a car fired shots at them.

The crossing guard said it happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ashland Avenue and Pearson Street.

A U.S. Postal Service truck ended up being peppered with bullets.

The crossing guard said she saw two young men walking down the street, then gunshots coming from a vehicle, and finally two young man returning fire.

She took cover.

When she came back up, she came face-to-face with the two young men and asked them if they were okay. They ran off.

A business owner nearby said he heard four or five shots.

"We both kind of looked at each other – didn't really know exactly. I was like, that sounded like gunshots," said Cameron Postiglione. "Maybe 20 seconds later, we came outside – and it was relatively quiet. It looked like nothing happened. Cars were still going by. There was one car making like a U-turn, I remember."

No one was struck by the gunfire. The Fire Department said one person was taken to Ascension St. Mary Hospital from the scene, but not for a gunshot wound.

We don't know if that person was the mail carrier or someone else.

No one was in custody late Tuesday.
