Hole Found In Roof Of Southwest Side School, Possible Explosive Device

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A charred hole was found Wednesday in the roof of a Southwest Side School, of what looked to be the result of an explosion.

A hole was discovered in the roof of the Columbia Explorers Academy Elementary School at 4520 S. Kedzie Ave. in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood, CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez reports.

Police said the hole was found Wednesday morning around 9:47 p.m. when students were already in class, but investigators believed it happened the night before.

Chicago Police and the ATF investigated the situation after what was thought to be a possible explosive device was found on the roof of the school. Investigators now know what caused the explosion, fireworks.

Students were taken to an adjacent building, as a precaution during the investigation. No injuries were reported, police said.

The school alerted parents of the situation, stating there was a suspicious device on the building and as a precaution. Parents had the option to pick up their children.

The building reopened at 12:10 p.m., police said.

There is no word yet whether the cameras on the school building may have captured the perpetrators. Investigators are reviewing the footage.
