Politicians, Activists Hold Rally On Minimum Wage Referendum

(CBS) -- Politicians trying to raise the minimum wage say they've done their part, and now it's your turn.

At a rally on Sunday, Governor Pat Quinn, Senator Dick Durbin, Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Danny Davis and Mike Quigley all joined the group "Raise Illinois" to launch a new campaign, aimed at getting half a million people to pledge to vote for an increase in Illinois' minimum wage.

"There is a principle as old as the Bible, if you work 40 hours a week, if you are doing your job, you shouldn't have to live in poverty," Quinn said. "That is something we all believe in and that is what we have to express at the ballot box on November 4."

A non-binding referendum will be on the November 4 ballot to increase the wage to $10 an hour next year.
