Mail Carrier Fatally Struck By Car At Lincoln Square Carwash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was struck and killed by a car Saturday morning at a carwash in the North Side Lincoln Square neighborhood.

About 9:50 a.m., a 56-year-old man drove a Volkswagen Golf through the closed overhead door of a carwash in the 5400 block of North Damen, according to Chicago Police.

Passion Overstreet, 28, was inside the carwash and struck by the door and the car, and pinned underneath, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Firefighters extricated Overstreet and took her to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.

Overstreet, a mail carrier, died of multiple injuries she suffered when she was struck by the vehicle, an autopsy Sunday determined. Her death was ruled an accident.

"The Chicago District Postal Service is shocked and sadden by the sudden loss of a dear Postal family member in this tragic incident," according to a statement from the postal service. "Our hearts and prayers are with her family and loved ones as well as with her extended Postal family at the Ravenswood Post Office."

The driver of the Volkswagen remained at the scene of the crash. The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit was investigating.
