CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago police were warning stores and shoppers to be on alert after a string of violent robberies at businesses on the Near North Side.

Police said four Near North Side shops have been robbed during the first 11 days of November. In each robbery, suspects entered a retail store and committed a theft. When confronted by a store employee, the suspects have used physical force. In one incident, the robber used a handgun.

The incidents included the following robberies:

• The 900 block of North State Street during the afternoon on Nov. 1;
• the 800 block of North Michigan Avenue during the late afternoon on Nov. 5;
• the 1200 block of North Larrabee Street during the early afternoon on Nov. 9;
• and the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue during the late afternoon on Nov. 11.

Police said the robberies were carried out by a variety of suspects, but all used force when confronted.

Police advised store employees not to engage armed individuals, and to save any available surveillance video.
