Police Warn Of Fake Cop Who Robbed Motorist In Streamwood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in northwest suburban Streamwood were on the hunt for a man they say is pretending to be a cop, and taking advantage of unsuspecting drivers.

The robber is described as a man with a heavy build, who dresses in dark blue, but does not have a badge.

He's apparently driving a dark-colored Ford sedan, similar to common police vehicles. It reportedly has flashing lights on the dashboard. Those might be decorative LED lights, such as those available at many auto parts stores.

Police said last Thursday, on Ascot Lane, near Schaumburg Road, he stopped a woman driving alone, identified himself as a Streamwood officer, and ordered her out of her car.

That's when he grabbed her purse, and sped away.

Streamwood police were released a sketch of the suspect (below).

Meantime, security experts said, if you feel unsure about being pulled over, remain in your car, roll down your window, and use a cell phone to call 911, and verify that it is indeed a real police officer.
