Police vehicle involved in crash in north Chicago suburb

NILES, Ill. (CBS) -- A Niles police vehicle was involved in a crash Tuesday evening in north suburban Niles.

Police said, around 7:20 p.m., a Honda sedan, a Nissan Sedan, and a Niles Police SUV were involved in a crash at the intersection of Caldwell Avenue and Gross Point Road – just north of Touhy Avenue and alongside a Cook County forest preserve.

Video from the scene showed a Niles police sport-utility vehicle off the road with its front end wrecked and mangled.

Two civilian cars were also wrecked – with one appearing to have broadsided the other. At least one Amazon package and some other items were seen in the roadway.

Police said the man driving the Honda was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A Niles police officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The woman driving the Nissan refused medical attention.

Illinois State Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
