Police: Two Charged After Off-Duty Officer Shoots Bat-Wielding Man On NW Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Charges have been filed against a man and a 17-year-old boy in a police-involved shooting late Saturday night in which the man is accused of attacking the officer with a baseball bat.
32-year-old Anthony Castaneda of the 2500 block of North Monitor is charged with one felony count of aggravated battery of a peace officer and one felony count of use of a deadly weapon. A 17-year-old boy was charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated a assault of a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of Cannabis possession.
The off-duty officer was walking in the 2600 block of North Monitor when around 10:30 p.m. police said he encountered an the 17-year-old holding his waistband.
Police say he announced he was an officer and began a pat down. The man he was checking for weapons called out to family members in the area, police said. Castenada came out armed with a bat and confronted the off-duty officer and struck him several times, police said.
The officer responded by pulling out his gun and shooting the bat-wielding man in the stomach, police said.
The officer was transported to the hospital with an arm injury and was later released. Bond was set at $250,000 for Castenada, who is still hospitalized and did not appear in bond court.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting and the officer will be on desk duty for the next 30 days, per department policy.
