Police: Teenage Boy Brought Loaded Handgun To Aurora Middle School

(STMW) -- A 13-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly bringing a loaded handgun to a school in west suburban Aurora on Monday.

A teacher at Washington Middle School, 231 Constitution Drive in Aurora, noticed students milling around the boy's locker about 2:30 p.m. and found the gun inside a bookbag, according to a statement from Aurora police.

The 13-year-old boy, an 8th grader from Aurora, allegedly brought the gun to school to show his friends. No one was hurt, police said.

The weapon belongs to a family member, police said.

The boy was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles. He was scheduled to appear for a status hearing Tuesday.

Aurora police and Washington Middle School resource officers are investigating.
