Police Shoot Man In Back Of The Yards After Witnessing Gunfight
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A male was shot by Chicago Police and seriously wounded Wednesday night after he opened fire at officers in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.
About 11 p.m., officers conducting a traffic stop in the 5100 block of South Wood Street saw two males exchanging gunfire from opposite sides of the street, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
The officers saw the muzzle flashes of the gun, according to Fraternal Order of Police Spokesman Pat Camden.
When the officers approached and announced themselves, one of the males turned and fired a handgun in the direction of the officers, police said.
The officers then opened fire and shot the male, police said.
The male, whose age was not immediately known, was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, Camden said. No police officers were injured.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said. The second male involved in the exchange of gunfire has not been taken into custody.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
