Police questioning person of interest in connection with fatal shooting of Loyola student Sheridan Gorman

Person of interest questioned as investigation continues into shooting death of Loyola student

Chicago police are questing a person of interest in connection with the fatal shooting of Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman

Gorman, 18, was walking with friends early Thursday morning near the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach when a masked gunman approached the group and opened fire. She was struck in the head and died at the scene.

Police have not released further details on the person of interest.

The Gorman family issued a statement, writing in part, "We ask anyone who knows anything—anything at all—to come forward and speak with law enforcement. Someone out there has information that matters. Doing nothing is not neutral. It only allows this to remain unresolved."

The student's family said Gorman was walking with her friends near her dorm to see the Northern Lights.

"She left her dorm to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. She was exactly where she should have been—close to campus, surrounded by friends, living her life," the family said in a statement. "What happened to Sheridan cannot be reduced to the idea of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The Gorman family confirmed public and private services will be held next week in Yorktown, New York, where her community is in mourning

The investigation remains ongoing.
