Police Question Relative Of Mother, Son Found Dead In Home

(CBS) -- Chicago police are questioning a relative of two Southwest Side family members who were found dead in their residence Thursday afternoon.

The individual was taken into custody Friday about a block away from where Maria Herrera, 49, and her autistic son, 22-year-old Carlos, were found dead Thursday by firefighters who responded to a 9-1-1 call in the 3600 block of West 55th Place. A small fire reportedly had been started at the West Elsdon home.

A small memorial to the victims continued to grow Friday.

For the staff at Southside Occupational Academy, it was especially difficult. Carlos completed the program in March.

"Carlos was just the best student you could ever have," Kalisa Gross said.

Relatives says the spouse of the woman was at work and another son, who is school-aged, was in class when the crime occurred.

The mother had been bound and gagged. Her son, who was autistic, had been stabbed.
