Police Question One In Ambush Shooting Of 7-Year-Old Elijah Dace

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Seven-year-old Elijah Dace was walking home from school on Wednesday when two gunmen ambushed him and shot him in the shoulder.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said the gunmen were hiding on the side of a garage, and jumped out as Elijah walked with a group of kids near 109th and Loomis streets around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The shooters, who appeared to be teens, opened fire, and shot Elijah in the shoulder, though police have said investigators do not believe he was the intended victim.

"Two individuals, teens, came out, standing right here, discharged weapons. When they discharged them weapons, they took off running southbound toward Ada Park, but the little 7-year-old laid here," Holmes said.

Detectives were questioning one person of interest Thursday morning, but no charges have yet been filed.

Elijah was being treated at Comer Children's Hospital, and doctors said he's doing well.
