Police: Man's Body Dragged Three Miles By Semi
NORTHLAKE, Ill. (STMW) -- An 89-year-old man who was struck and killed early Tuesday morning was dragged more than three miles by a semi before the driver discovered his body, police said.
Investigators believe Carmello Anzalone was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the "busy intersection" at Mannheim Road and Armitage Avenue in Leyden after getting off a bus, Northlake Police Department Commander Jay Militello said.
His body was later discovered attached to the undercarriage of a semi truck, more than three miles away in an industrial area at Grand Avenue and Garnet Drive, Militello said.
The driver discovered Anzalone's body while making a delivery there, he said.
Anzalone, of the 2300 block of North Normandy Avenue in Chicago, was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:29 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy Wednesday found Anzalone died of multiple injuries from being struck by a semi and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner's office.
The semi driver has not been charged or cited as of Wednesday afternoon, though the accident remains under investigation, Militello said.
