Police Searching For Hit-And-Run Driver In Fatal Portage Park Crash

(CBS) --Police are looking for the driver responsible for a deadly hit-and-run crash in Portage Park.

The crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. on Irving Park Road near Long Avenue.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports if you speak with neighbors about the road we're near they will tell you despite speed cameras, and traffic signals, it's not uncommon to see cars barreling down the road.

Police say speed was a factor in this morning's deadly collision. A mini-van traveling at a high rate of speed hit a 2002 Honda Civic, police said. The force of that caused the Honda to hit a tree with the impact eventually killing the driver inside.

When police got to the scene they found that man unresponsive.

What cops failed to find was the driver of the minivan and anyone inside that vehicle. Investigators say they ran from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run.

"I heard the screeching of like speeding cars then the screeching of brakes then boom impact," said Pete Gajic.

"People don't care," said Steve Betancourt. "Wide street and long strip so they go as fast as they want as long as they don't care."

It's unclear how many people police are looking for. No one is in custody in connection with the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Chicago Police.
