Police: Man Found Dead After Car Drives Into Schiller Park Retention Pond

(STMW) -- A man was found dead after a vehicle drove into a retention pond early Sunday in northwestern suburban Schiller Park, police said.

About 2:30 a.m., the car was driving southbound on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and exiting onto eastbound Irving Park Road when it drove into the pond, according to Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Greg Hart.

The Schiller Park Fire Department brought in a dive team and pulled the man's body from the water, Hart said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

The vehicle, which was fully submerged, was found to be empty, but divers were still searching the pond as of 7 a.m., Hart said. It was not immediately known whether the man was the only occupant.

The ramp from I-294 to Irving Park Road was closed to traffic.
