Police Investigating Fatal Crash On I-57 Near 171st Street

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 57 that left one person dead and two others injured Tuesday night.

The crash took place in the southbound lanes near 171st Street around 11:20 p.m.

Illinois State Police said a silver 2005 Nissan Altima ran out of gas and stalled in the right lane, when a white 2016 Nissan Sentra crashed into the stalled car while merging from the center lane to the right lane.

A 23-year-old man who was a passenger in the Sentra was killed, police said. A 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Altima suffered life-threatening injuries, and was taken to the hospital. The 44-year-old man driving the Sentra was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Altima was not hurt.

Police said the driver of the Altima was drunk, but was not injured. Charges were pending Wednesday afternoon.

All southbound lanes were closed as police investigated the crash, but the lanes reopened by 5:10 a.m.
