Police Investigate After Transgender Woman Is Found Shot To Death In East Chatham

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Police late Saturday were investigating a deadly shooting in East Chatham.

Around 8:35 pm. Christmas Day night, police found a body on the south side of 82nd Street near Drexel Avenue. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

Police initially described the victim as a man. But friends and family said she was a transgender woman identified as Courtney "Eshay" Key and expressed resentment at her being misgendered.

At first, Key was believed to be the victim of a hit-and-run crash. But police later found the victim had suffered gunshot wounds.

Area Two detectives were investigating late Saturday.
