Homeless Man Beaten To Death By Two Men In Logan Square Alley

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 57-year-old homeless man was beaten to death in a Logan Square alley late Saturday night.

Chicago Police say two men got out of a car in the 1900 block of North Ridgeway at 10:50 p.m. and attacked the man in the alley. Neighbors say it was a black car.

The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the man as Ernesto Garcia. Neighbors say he worked in an auto body shop. He was going to turn 58 in a few days, people in the neighborhood were planning a party for him on Monday.

A man who lives in the neighborhood tells WBBM Garcia was from Guatemala and he says he and his wife let him sleep in their garage. They would occasionally bring him meals.

Naara Gonzalez called 911 after she and her father found Ernesto Garcia behind their garage bleeding profusely. They were alerted to the crime by another homeless man who pounded on their door on North Ridgeway asking for help.

Paramedics arrived and attempted to revive Garcia but Gonzalez says he never appeared to regain consciousness.

Police say they don't have anyone in custody.
