Police Find SUV That Struck And Killed Lake In The Hills Couple In Florida

(CBS) -- Police in Florida have found the vehicle suspected of fatally striking a Lake in the Hills couple on vacation in Clearwater.

Clearwater Police spokesman Rob Shaw confirmed police seized the silver 2002 Mercedes-Benz SUV early Wednesday from the Tampa area home of Charles Winzenread.

"It will now be processed forensically as the investigation continues. A search warrant was obtained in Hillsborough County to seize the vehicle, and a separate search warrant will have to be obtained in order to search the vehicle," Shaw said in an email.

Sunday evening, 62-year-old John Berg, and 51-year-old Viola Flores were crossing a street in Clearwater, when they were struck by a silver Mercedes SUV, which fled the scene.

Both died at a local hospital.

Police said they obtained surveillance video showing the SUV fleeing the scene of the crash on Clearwater Memorial Causeway.

Shaw said the fact the vehicle isn't very common helped police find it.

"We were able to kind of winnow down that list of about 100 SUVs in this area, and find the right one," he said.
