Police: Fatal Crash Closes Southbound Edens For 6 Hours

SKOKIE, Ill. (STMW) -- A 26-year-old Minnesota man is dead and charges are pending against a north suburban Lincolnwood man after a rear-end collision on the Edens Expressway in Skokie early Sunday.

The Lincolnwood man, driving a white, 2-passenger Audi, was likely speeding when his car rearended a Chevy truck on the southbound Edens near Touhy Avenue about 1:45 a.m., according to Illinois State Police.

The man driving the Chevy veered the truck to the right before it rolled over twice, police said.

The driver of the Chevy, Samee Ranginwala, of Mankato, Minn., was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:09 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy performed Sunday found Ranginwala died of brain injuries he suffered in the crash and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

Charges are pending against the driver of the Audi, who was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said Sunday afternoon.

Both vehicles appeared to be completely mangled and were at separate ends of what Illinois State Police Master Sgt. George Jimenez said was a quarter-mile-long crash scene.

All southbound lanes were reopened almost six hours after the crash at 7:30 a.m., police said.

Illinois State Police are investigating.
