Police: Three Killed In Gary Car Crash

(CBS) -- A violent car crash on I-80/94 early Sunday morning has left three people dead, reports WBBM's Nancy Harty.

The Dodge Avenger had just passed a semi heading westbound on I-80/94 near Cline at around 3:30 a.m. when the driver, 22-year-old Robert Hayes of Chicago, lost control, according to Indiana State Police.

The car hit a concrete barrier, flipped and landed on the barrier, splitting in two and starting a fire. Police say the fire was put out by Good Samaritans who stopped at the scene.

State police say three passengers were killed: 21-year-old Shaquita Kendrick, from Markham, 21-year-old William Burton from Calumet City and 20-year-old Timothy Riley of Calumet City.

Hayes and another passenger, 22-year-old John Paul Misquez, are hospitalized with various injuries. Misquez is listed in fair condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Charges are pending against Hayes as the Lake County Prosecutor investigates.
