Police: 1 Killed, 6 Injured In Canaryville Crash

(STMW) -- One person was killed and six others were injured in a four-vehicle crash early Saturday in the Canaryville neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.

A Mitsubishi was driving eastbound on 47th Street about 1:12 a.m. when it ran a red light at the intersection with Halsted and crossed over into oncoming traffic, police said. The Mitsubishi then hit a Nissan Altima, causing the Altima to hit a Nissan Armada. This caused the Armada to hit a Honda Civic.

The male driver of the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His age was not known Saturday morning.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm his death.

The 26-year-old woman driving the Altima was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said. Two of her passengers, a 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, were also taken to Mount Sinai in fair condition. A third passenger was taken to Mercy Hospital in fair condition.

Two passengers from the Armada, a 38-year-old woman and a 61-year-old woman, were taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, police said. The 33-year-old man driving refused medical treatment.

The 26-year-old man driving the Honda also refused medical treatment, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Police Major Accidents Investigation Unit.
