Plane Crashes Near Newark, Illinois

(CBS) -- A small private plane carrying a flight instructor and a student crashed 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The extent of injuries wasn't immediately known.

The accident happened near Cushing Field Limited Airport, on Illinois Route 71 and County Line Road, near the border of LaSalle and Kendall counties.

FAA representatives say local authorities tell them there were two people on board who were transported from the scene.

Exactly who was on the plane and the extent of injuries are not yet public. "Learn to fly" could be seen on the tail of the two-seater.

The plane is believed to have become tangled in power lines. Ameren reported more than 1,000 customers were without power in the area, and repairs were underway.

Chopper 2 observed the wreckage of what appeared to be a twin-seat private airplane on the ground. Five ambulances were initialy sent to the scene, according to dispatch reports.
