Pizza Chain Honors Developmentally Disabled Man For 20 Years Of Service

(CBS) -- For two decades, 47-year-old James Davis has been working at the Little Caesar's Pizza, 3337 W. North Ave.

He says he's a jack of all trades at the carry-out restaurant.

"I wash dishes, cleanup, I help people out when nobody is here and I take the garbage out. I've been doing this for 20 years," he tells WBBM Newsradio's Lisa Fielding.

Davis was placed by Envision Unlimited, a non-profit organization that serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He works part-time five days a week.

"I love it here. Why? I like the people, the bosses," he says.

On Tuesday, he will be honored for his service to Little Caesar's at a special ceremony in Detroit.

His mother, Melanee Roper, says she couldn't be prouder.

"He travels on his own, he dresses himself, he's an excellent cook, and he's been on this job for 20 years. I'm very, very proud. I'm proud of the relationship with Envision and Little's Caesar's," she says.

Roper says when James was born, his doctors told her he probably wouldn't live past four years old. Her son serves as a role model for the developmentally disabled, she says.

"No matter what difficulties a person may have, what challenges they have, James is living proof impossible things can happen," she says.

Little Caesar's is flying James and his mother to Detroit and putting them up at the Motor City Hotel and Casino for the night and honoring him at their ceremony on Wednesday.
