Pilsen Restaurant Employees Get Helping Hand From Community
(CBS) -- More than 60 people are out of a job after a fire this week shut down a landmark restaurant in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Friday, the community rallied together to help the families affected.
CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports.
The event was to raise money for employees of Nuevo Leon. Some businesses already are offering them temporary jobs, to help them get through the holidays.
"I started off as a bus boy and then moved up to a waiter and then from there inside to the kitchen," says Jhoan Camarema says, who began working at Nuevo Leon when he was 16.
The kitchen, he says, was like his home away from home.
Employees depended on the longtime business. That's where community comes in.
"During the holidays, at least they have something for their families," says Byron Sigcho, board member of the Pilsen Alliance.
A Go Fund Me page has raised close to $6,000 for employees. Nuevo Leon's owners hope to reopen within a year.
