CHICAGO (CBS) -- A person was fatally struck by a Red Line train early Monday on the South Side.

The male was struck by the northbound train shortly before 4 a.m. near 71st Street, according to Chicago Police and CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.

He was dead at the scene, but additional information, including his age, was not immediately available, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

Trains were halted in the area for nearly four hours, but were on the move and operating with residual delays by 7:55 a.m., according to the transit agency.
