Person On Red Line Tracks Disrupts Service, Traffic On Dan Ryan

(STMW) -- Red Line trains were running again, but experiencing major delays, after a person walking on the tracks near the 79th Street station halted rail service during the Thursday afternoon rush.

Emergency crews responded about 3:30 p.m. to a male making suicidal statements near the 79th Street overpass at the expressway, police and fire officials said.

Crews were forced to shut down rail service until they were able to remove him about 6:30 p.m., police said.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for evaluation, police said.

The Red Line was shut down between the 95th and 63rd street stations to allow crews to respond, forcing passengers to take a bus between stops, officials said. Trains are running again but with major residual delays, according to the CTA's website.

Two lanes of the Dan Ryan (I-94) in each direction were also shut down during the response, but have reopened as of Thursday evening.
