Woman Fatally Shot In Griffith, Ind. Church Parking Lot

(CBS) – A woman was fatally shot Monday in a Griffith, Ind. church and school parking lot, and the suspect -- her estranged husband -- later killed himself at the Gary home they once shared.

Griffith police say they were summoned to Saint Mary's School, 525 N. Broad St., around 4:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired and found the victim. The Lake County Coroner identified her as 42-year-old Nina Castro, who had recently moved to Chicago.

Castro had been picking up her 15-year-old son when she was killed in front of the teen, CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.

Her husband – 54-year-old Remanard Castro – fled on a motorcycle but was confronted by police at his Gary home, Griffith police said. He was ordered to drop his weapon but instead fatally shot himself in the head, authorities said.

Police stressed there is no threat to public safety.
