Person Dies In Illinois State Police-Involved Shooting

METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in southern Illinois say a person has been killed in a shooting involving a State Police trooper.

Illinois State Police said in a Saturday news release that a witness reported seeing a male suspect possibly carrying a handgun into a neighbor's yard and hearing gunshots.

Officers from different law enforcement agencies including Massac County and Metropolis arrived at the scene. Authorities say the male suspect allegedly assaulted a Metropolis resident the day before.

Just before 9:30 a.m. Saturday, a State Police trooper allegedly found the armed suspect and shots were fired.

The deceased person has not been identified.

No officers were injured.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The death is being investigated by several law enforcement agencies.
