Peoples Gas Restores Service To Dozens In Beverly And Morgan Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Peoples Gas crews had restored natural gas to dozens in the Beverly and Morgan Park neighborhoods by Thursday evening.

The first problem was a gas main that was damaged Tuesday while a new water line was being installed in the street on the 2100 block of West 107th Place in Morgan Park. Darlene Sheahan's home at 2148 W. 107th Pl. was destroyed in a natural gas explosion while Peoples Gas and Fire Department crews were going door-to-door to shut off gas service. She and her children were not home at the time, but the family dog was killed.

Natural gas service was still shut off for 52 homes in Morgan Park on Thursday, as the damaged main still needed more work.

In another incident, a gas main in the 10000 block of South Prospect Avenue in the Beverly neighborhood was damaged by a third-party contractor on Wednesday. Natural gas service was shut off for more than 90 homes at 3 p.m., and the main was repaired by about 9 p.m.

Peoples Gas workers went door-to-door Wednesday night to relight pilot lights, and had restored service to most of the homes by Thursday morning, but in cases where no one answered the door, workers left a card behind with a number to call to restore service as soon as possible.

"We want to thank our customers in Beverly and Morgan Park who waited patiently over the past 24 hours while our crews worked night and day to repair and restore natural gas service in both communities," Peoples Gas said in a statement Thursday night.

The utility was trying to reach one resident to restore gas to a final home.
