Parents Scramble For Last Minute Child Care After Schools Close
(CBS) -- For parents who did have to go to work today, finding child care at the last moment was a challenge, reports WBBM's Regine Schlesinger.
One option: Chicago-area YMCA's which, for a fee, offer day care for children whose schools were closed. Greg Mordica at the High Ridge Y at Touhy and Western says from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., they provide a constructive way for kids to spend the day.
"We play different board games and do some arts-and-crafts and do some physical fitness stuff in the gym, like play basketball or scatterball. We do lunch and take them swimming," he said.
10-year-old Philip was thrilled to be out of school and spending the day at the Y.
"It's better...because you don't have to do work. You can just play around all day," he said.
But, not 11-year-old Sabrina.
"I'd rather be at school....because there are people my own age," she said.
She brought a book along to pass the time.
For members, the Y charges $35 for the day, $45 for non-members.
