Two Parachutists Injured During Air And Water Show

(CBS) -- Two parachutists performing in the Chicago Air & Water Show Saturday morning were injured in a mid-air collision.

One of the parachutists, who is with the U.S. Army Golden Knights, deployed his emergency chute and possibly hit a building in the Gold Coast near Schiller and Lake Shore Drive. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on the brain and was in critical condition, according to Donna Dixon, a spokesperson for the Golden Knights. The parachutist remained in critical condition Sunday morning, the spokesperson confirmed.

The other parachutist, with the U.S. Navy Leap Frog team, landed in front of the boat house at North Avenue Beach and was transported to the hospital in serious-to-critical condition and suffered a broken leg.

Names were not released Saturday.

The Golden Angels have canceled activities planned for Sunday Air & Water show, Dixon said.

A spokesperson for the Navy Leap Frog team could not be reached.

One woman who lives in the Gold Coast ran to her window after she saw a parachute float past. She says at first she thought it was a dummy because his body was limp.

"He wasn't awake…I'm sure he wasn't," she said.

Witnesses say the parachutist clipped the building and was bloodied and unconscious when he landed.
