Palatine School District Could Lose $6 Million In Federal Funds For Transgender Locker Room Policy

(CBS) -- Six million dollars in federal money that the Palatine school district has been getting could be in jeopardy - now that the federal government says District 211 is violating an anti-discrimination law.

The issue is the rights of a transgender student who identifies as female and her right to use the girl's locker room.

The Civil Rights Office of the U.S. Department of Education now says Township High School District 211 is violating the law by not giving the student unrestricted access to the girl's locker room.

The school district says the student may use the locker room - in private, separate changing areas.

The federal government says that's not good enough - and that the school district has 30 days to comply.

The feds could take away Title 9 funding, which amounts to about $6 million.

A spokesman for the Palatine school district says if that happens, it would deny help to the neediest students.
