Owners Raising Money To Save Suburban Roller Rink

(CBS) -- McHenry residents are being asked to visit a Go Fund Me page to help save a landmark roller rink that's closing this summer if the owners can't come up with the cash or materials to spruce it up, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

The building housing the Just For Fun Roller Rink has been around since the 1930s, according to owner Lisa Duncan.

First it was a dance hall and since 1945 it has been a roller rink. She says she hears Jimi Hendrix played there, Dick Biondi DJed, and Jerry Lewis hosted a telethon, but it has seen better days.

"Unfortunately, technology has killed us," Duncan said. "They don't spend as much time with family. Now they call the roller rink 'retro.' But retro is retro, as long as it gets the families and the moms and dads involved and the kids and they're exercising. It helps with anxiety, all kinds of things."

Duncan says it's not a moneymaker and it won't be but it says every dollar helps and she hopes people might donate paint, labor, gravel, lighting and bathroom fixtures to keep the rink operating.
